We were approached by ESS Tuning last month to install one of their supercharger systems on an E92 BMW. They were looking for a local shop to establish a relationship with for installs and development. We are proud to say we started this relationship in the hopes of brining our customers some of the best supercharger kits on the market. The following is our first ever ESS supercharger kit install.

BMW’s race inspired E92 is complimented well with a Supercharger
The mid-level intercooled E9X M3 VT2-625 supercharger system produces 625hp and 410lb-ft of torque at 6.5-7psi of boost. A 211hp gain over stock, which is more than a Mercedes SLS Black Series. Featuring the newly developed, self contained Vortech V3 supercharger unit in Si trim, the supercharger is capable of producing up to 775hp.

Keep it cool
The VT2-625 comes with the largest capacity liquid intercooler system on the market integrated within a specially developed cast aluminum intake manifold assembly ‘ribbed’ with optimized runners and velocity stacks. This ensures the intake charge temps remain in check during prolonged use on the track, autobahn, or street. The manifold was designed not only for optimum flow, but for minimal weight to not disrupt the iconic handling balance of the M3

Software that back the hardware
The supercharger system includes the ESS E-Flash OBD2 cable and specific ESS MSS60 engine software that is perfectly calibrated for the VT2-625 supercharged engine providing optimum ignition timing under all conditions, recalibrated EGA’s for quicker throttle response, recalibrated VANOS control, and perfectly optimized fuel delivery.

Supporting power mods is essential
Whenever power adding modifications are added to a vehicle, its important to do supporting mods to ensure a healthy life span for your car. In the case of this E92, there is a well documented issue with the rod bearings and abnormal wear patterns. Playing on the safe side we opted to replace them with an upgraded package from WPC.

Factory upgraded components
When exchanging the rod bearings, we chose to go with WPC treated rod bearings, which are factory components with an aftermarket process applied to reduce friction and increase strength. Then partnered with ARP bolts for added strength.

A well documented issue with the S65 Motor
It is a know fact amongst BMW enthusiasts that the S65 motor platforms are prone to premature wear on their rod bearings. knowing this we prompted our client to replace them during the supercharger install. pictured above are the original factory bearings with only 80,000 miles on them.

The goal of this build was to create a M3 that featured usable power, the 625 hp is more then enough to enjoy spirited driving, while taking into account preventative maintenance steps to insure the car remained on the road for years to come. We also learned the quality of ESS Tuning’s product as throughout the install we were working with quality components with a factory finish. The relationship with ESS is in the early stages but we can’t help but tease the idea of a v10 kits and 1000+hp turbos we might get to play with soon.
